Located just outside downtown Newberry, SC is one of the world’s most renowned orchid growers and purveyors. Orchids are one of two of the planet’s largest groups of flowering plants with 28,000 recognized species (including vanilla)! You’ll find a nice selection available here.

Carter and Holmes Orchids had its start following WWII when orchids as corsage flowers became popular. Today the company sells orchids to nurseries and garden centers throughout the world. Local residents who visit Hawaii have reported that they have found orchids grown in Newberry on display in that tropical paradise!

Visitors are welcomed at the Main Greenhouse where they can shop for orchids and growing supplies. It’s well worth the drive to Newberry (43 miles from the SC Statehouse) to check this place out, whether you currently grow orchids or are curious about getting started. Their staff will gladly answer questions about all-things-orchids and for groups of 10 or more, tours can be arranged. The company also offers free workshops with limited seating (RSVP only) throughout the year. They have 4 open houses each year, the next one is coming in March 2022. Check out their Facebook events page to find out about upcoming dates and times. To gain further information on growing orchids, visit their website where they feature topics like Barerooting and Transplanting Orchids, Good Practices for Handling Orchids, and Why You Should NOT Just Add Ice.
