For gardeners, this is the time of year that brings much excitement as flower bulbs and perennial flowers start poking up and it’s nice enough to work outside again. Whether you’re an old pro or just starting out, there is always so much to learn about gardening. Sal’s Ol’ Timey Feed and Seed is here to help everyone get a great garden going this year.
The farm is located in Columbia a bit north of I-20 between US Hwy 321 (Fairfield Road) and US Hwy 21 (Wilson Blvd.). Here you can purchase seeds and plants, as well as gardening supplies and compost dirt. They sell mulch for just $35 per pick-up truck load.
Imagine this year’s garden being full of delicious tomatoes, beans, watermelon, canteloupe, lettuces, squashes, carrots, and greens! Sal’s sells local, Non-GMO seeds & plants. They weigh up seed just like they did in the old days. Right now, which is February 2022, they are selling all kinds of vegetable seeds, seedlings, roots and herb seeds. See their current selection here. You can order online here, or you can head to Sal’s (see hours below).
As a seventh-generation homesteader, Sallie enjoys sharing her knowledge of South Carolina gardening. In addition to offering advice when you come to purchase garden supplies, plants, and seeds, Sal offers gardening classes.
On February 27, she has organized a workshop by Heidi Lux which will instruct participants in building a self-composting “New Earth Gardener” low maintenance high yield raised bed. Come ready to work and learn. Tickets sale proceeds go to Sal’s Greenhouse Fund (Sal is pulling the funds together to build a new greenhouse). Learn more about Heidi here.
A personalized garden consultation is also available for gardeners who’d like Sal to visit their property. $150 an hour (must be in the Columbia area). More here.
Here’s another great way to get started. Order Sal’s Garden Box. The box is an all-in-one gardening course delivered to your door every month. It will supply you with everything you need in order to make gardening fun and easy! The Box provides you with local varieties of seeds and products picked especially for South Carolina’s unique soil and climate. It also offers detailed instructions and online help.
Each box is custom crafted with seasonally themed collections for $27.00 every month. You can cancel your subscription at any time. They only put together 100 boxes each month, so you may have to wait for a slot to open. More info on this here. Right now, for non-subscribers, you can get a February box for $35, with everything included to grow a great pot of vegetable soup! More here.
A visit to Sal’s Ol’ Timey Feed and Seed can include a tour where you’ll enjoy the mules, goats and other animals on the farm & see tractors and plows from years gone by.
