An iconic small farm in South Carolina, Whippoorwill Farms in Jasper County (about 40 minutes from Hilton Head or Savannah) is the result of a hard-working dedicated couple, James and Marissa, and their team of helpers. What began on 2 acres with a few animals and a garden has become 40 acres, more animals, and more work! But that doesn’t bother James and Marissa who started with mismanaged timberland and are busily turning it into a productive organic farm.

What They Grow
Tomatoes, okra, cucumbers, zucchini, kale, spinach, and more are grown in their no-till garden. (read more about this forward-thinking concept on Facebook) They raise chickens, ducks, guineas, and pigs – all free-range on their forested land – for slaughter. They utilize breeds of poultry that are hardy and efficient foragers, who not only enjoy thick forested spaces but thrive in them. Their farm also produces fresh eggs. They sell their meats, eggs and produce at the farm (call ahead), and at weekly farmers’ markets in Savannah and Hilton Head. More here.

Pay What You Can Farm Stand
What began as a way to organically feed themselves and their family has grown to be a doorway to fresh meats and veggies for the Jasper County community, a “food desert” where folks have to ride a bus to Savannah to buy fresh food or to work a decent job. As Marissa became acquainted with her neighbors, she became overwhelmed by the amount of need in her community. After receiving a $1500 crowdfund grant, Whipporwill Farms built a Pay What You Can farm stand where their produce and meats are sold to locals who “pay what they can”. Sharing the farm’s wealth with others is what this place is all about. Their neighbors’ love, needs, and appreciation have spurred them on. Set beneath the spreading limbs of a giant oak tree, the farm stand offers fresh produce, eggs, and meats. James and Marissa’s goal is to put 20% of their farm’s output on the table and in the freezer at the Farm Stand. They don’t make any profit from this venture, but it stands as a testimonial to their kindness and love for their neighbors.
